The University of Pattimura (Ambon, Indonesia) is strengthening it’s technical capacity on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in spatial planning. To support this process the university was awarded a grant by Nuffic, the Dutch organisation for international academic cooperation. Witteveen+Bos was selected to implement a training and research project at the university.
The six-months training and research project consist of a mix of lectures, training courses on GIS and spatial planning and two research projects. The research projects will focus on coastal erosion and sedimentation (Ambon Island) and on sustainable mining (Romang Island). The aim is to assess the environmental and spatial impacts, the causes and potential solutions. The research will include remote sensing techniques, field surveys and GIS analyses.
Witteveen+Bos will also be training the university on the organisational aspects of applied sciences and consulting services to clients (governmental agencies in the Maluku archipelago, NGO’s, international donors). Witteveen+Bos cooperates with Saxion University for Applied Sciences and Waardenburg BV in this project.
