Aquifer Storage and Recovery

(04-04-2011)

Witteveen+Bos will undertake a feasibility study for Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) in Jakarta. ASR involves injecting water into the underground during periods when water is available, and recovering it during times when it is needed.

In this way sustainable groundwater management is achieved. The extraction of groundwater has led to a decrease of available groundwater, droughts and to land subsidence. In many cases groundwater is the only source of water, since drinking water companies do not deliver everywhere and not 24/7.

This project aims to research the technical, financial and legal (permits) sustainability of ASR and to promote ASR. Geohydrological and geochemical processes and the adjustment of watertreatment are important subjects for research.

This feasibility study will be carried with contributions from Deltares, drinking water company Drenthe, drilling company Haitjema and Indonesian partners.
